Traveling to Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Virginia is located in southwest Virginia, about 38 miles from our largest neighboring city of Roanoke. Blacksburg may be accessed using several different modes of transportation. The Directions to Virginia Tech webpage provides specific directions, maps and travel details.

The Graduate School would also like to offer the following tips:

If driving:
Driving is the easiest way to reach the town of Blacksburg. Follow the directions located in the link above.

If flying:
Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA) is the closest airport to campus, located approximately 40 miles (64 km) away. From Roanoke, the Smart Way Bus will bring you directly to campus.

International students, please note that you do not have to fly into the Roanoke Regional Airport. The Roanoke Airport, however, is the only airport from which Virginia Tech will provide a pick-up service. Visit the Cranwell International Center for more information.

If taking the bus or train:
Greyhound bus service will bring passengers to Roanoke. From there, students can take the Smart Way Bus to campus. See the directions link for details.

Train service is not a particularly convenient option to get to Blacksburg, as there are no stations within close proximity of campus.

Options for traveling from Roanoke to Blacksburg:
The Smart Way Bus is a convenient and inexpensive mode of transportation. The bus stops at the Roanoke Regional Airport as well as at the Greyhound bus station. It runs directly to the center of campus at Virginia Tech. The Smart Way Bus does not operate on Sundays, but it offers extended hours on Friday and Saturday. Check the schedules for details and plan your trip accordingly.

Another option for transportation to Blacksburg from Roanoke is a taxi. Taxi fares for this trip cost approximately $40 to $50.
