Class Registration

Each department possesses its own unique set of degree and registration requirements. New students should first consult with their department's graduate advisor prior to registering for any classes.

Virginia Tech allows students to register for classes during two windows of time, pre-registration and registration. Students must have established a PID (personal identifier) before they can register during either period. The dates for these registration periods are posted on the Registrar's website.

Registration (Drop/Add)
At the beginning of each semester, there is a time period during which students may add and drop courses for that semester. This registration period is also known as Drop/Add. In Hokie SPA, students will select Registration and Schedule. At the next menu, students will select Drop/Add Classes and follow the commands to select classes. Hokie SPA will not allow you to enroll in classes that are full or are restricted. When you finish submitting your class information in Hokie SPA, you will immediately be enrolled in those classes. You may continue to change your course schedule by dropping and adding courses until the published deadlines.

Additional information about registration may be found at the Registrar's website.

Pre-Registration (Course Request)
Students who are admitted to Virginia Tech well in advance of their term of enrollment may be able to request courses early using pre-registration; however, many new students will not use pre-registration until their second semester at Virginia Tech. If you are not able to enroll during pre-registration, please do not be concerned. Many graduate courses do not fill up, and you will be able to enroll during the Drop/Add period. Again, you must have established a PID prior to enrolling in classes. Also, make sure to consult with the graduate advisor in your department prior to requesting courses.

The pre-registration process allows students to request courses for a particular semester several months prior to the beginning of that term. Pre-registration is typically a weeklong period held once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. During this time, you will log on to Hokie SPA, select Registration and Schedule, and select Course Request. After submitting your course requests, you must wait several weeks prior to receiving a confirmation (called the Class Ticket) of the courses in which you were enrolled. The Registrar processes all course requests during this time and will enroll you in your requested courses according to availability. Upon completion of this review, the Registrar will e-mail you to advise you to check Hokie SPA to review your Class Ticket. Your Class Ticket is a confirmation of your actual course enrollment. If you would like to make changes to your Class Ticket, you may do so during the Drop/Add period in the beginning of the semester. Additional information about Course Request may be found at the Registrar's website.

Tuition Payment

You must register for classes before you can pay your tuition and fees. After registering for classes, a bill will be generated. The bill will include tuition, comprehensive fees, and other charges you may have incurred. Please check your account status on Hokie SPA and pay any outstanding charges prior to the payment due date. You may not receive a paper statement in advance of your payment due date, but you will be responsible for the charges regardless. Changes to your registration may affect your tuition bill; therefore, it is important that you review the most current balance information that is listed on Hokie SPA. A Hokie Passport will not be issued if the student has a balance due. For more information, visit the Bursar's website.

Students on Assistantship: Please refer to the assistantship webpage to review how your assistantship will affect your tuition. Generally, total fees are not covered by assistantships, but in-state and out-of-state tuition may be covered in full or in part.

Full-time Status

Students on assistantships or fellowships are required to register for a minimum of 12 hours, all other students should register for 9 hours to qualify for full-time status. There is no additional increase in tuition beyond 9 hours.
