Citizen Scholar Experience

Program Requirements

Eligibility
All Virginia Tech graduate students are eligible to participate.

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for participating in the program.

Program Components
In order for participants to become Citizen Scholars, each must complete an independent, self-designed experience. The experience can be composed of multiple small components or one large component. It is expected, however, that each student will complete at least 16 hours of "citizen-scholar" work. The needs of each participant will determine the length and type of their individual experiences. Descriptions of several example components are provided below:

1. Service Project

The service project is a self-designed, community-based project aimed at helping the student put theory to practice. Students choose a project that will be challenging and educational. Projects will vary greatly in their scope and time-commitment from one student to another. The students and his/her advisor may want to formalize the project by enrolling the student in a Special Study (X984) or Independent Study (X974) course for the duration of the project.

A list of available resources is also presented here. The resources include on-going projects that are both external and internal to the university that may be used as Citizen Scholar Projects. Or, students may design their own projects based on the needs in their particular fields.

2. Citizen Scholar Internships

For those interested, the Graduate School is collaborating with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) to offer Citizen Scholar Internships. VCE Citizen Scholar Interns work closely with VCE developing and carrying out need-based projects for the State of Virginia. Projects can be developed for ALL academic departments within the university. Students interested in this option should see the contacts page for contact information. Those concerned about funding during the internship should ask the CSE contact for available options.

3. Citizen Scholar Seminar

The Citizen Scholar Seminar is a three-credit hour seminar taught by the Graduate School. The course addresses topics relating to public scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and ethics. Contact the CSE contact for more information.

4. Others - as you design

After completing a CSE, the student must complete the CSE Nomination Form and receive the appropriate approval signatures. Please submit the form to Nancy Feuerbach in the Graduate School (Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown, Mail Code 0325).

Submission Deadlines — Fall 2008

Nomination forms due: November 1, 2008

The nomination review process will occur with a recognition ceremony to be held before the close of the Fall 2008 semester.
