Graduate School Programs and Events

The Graduate School coordinates a variety of programs and events throughout the year — welcoming students to the university with Orientation, providing students with resources to help with academic and professional success through information sessions, celebrating student achievements with recognition ceremonies, and conferring graduate degrees at Commencement.

The Graduate School coordinates Fall and Spring commencement ceremonies to honor the recipients of master's degrees, doctoral degrees, and graduate certificates.

Dialog with the Dean   Dialog with the Dean
Dean of the Graduate School, Karen P. DePauw invites you to join her in a discussion about graduate education, university policies, and graduate student life at Virginia Tech. Dean DePauw hosts the Dialog with the Dean once a month during the fall and spring semesters. This informal gathering is sponsored by the GSA. Upcoming Dialogs are posted on the Graduate School home page and calendar, included in the Dean's monthly memos, and sent to graduate students via e-mail on the graduate student listserv.
 
Emerging leaders workshop  

Emerging Leaders Workshop
The Emerging Leaders Workshop, hosted each August, provides a group of rising sophomores and juniors from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) with a unique opportunity to prepare for graduate school and career opportunities. Participants engage in three and one half days of intensive workshops with Senior Scholars and industry professionals to learn the three prongs of sustainable leadership: academic success, community service and ethical behavior.

Fellowship reception  

Fellowship Reception
The Graduate School recognizes the outstanding graduate student recipients of fellowships and scholarships each fall with a reception hosted by President Charles W. Steger and Dean Karen P. DePauw.

Graduate alumni  

Graduate Alumni Homecoming
Graduate alumni are invited to join Graduate School staff, Alumni Relations staff, and current graduate students for a brunch with music and conversation prior to the first home football game each year.

Graduate Education Week
Graduate Education Week, held each March, features events that celebrate the achievements of graduate students and brings attentions to developments in graduate education. The Graduate School coordinates event that offer students fun celebrations, resources for personal and professional development, and an opportunity to learn about the future of graduate life and scholarship. Annual highlights of Graduate Education Week include the GSA Research Symposium and Exposition, the Graduate Student Awards Banquet, and the Graduate School's Big Cook Out.

 

 
GTA workshop  

GTA Workshop
Each Fall the Graduate School hosts a three day workshop for new graduate teaching assistants. The presenters--faculty members, program directors, and experienced GTAs--have all volunteered their time and expertise to offer this multi-faceted program. These sessions are designed to assist graduate teaching assistants to prepare to teach classes and laboratories, as well as to grade papers, and interact with students. Departments stipulate in the assistantship agreement or in a subsequent letter if GTAs are required to attend this workshop.

International Graduate Student Service Office  

International Student Information Sessions
The International Graduate Student Services Office occassionally hosts seminars about topics of interest to international graduate students such as Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and H1-B visa status.

Upcoming information sessions are posted on the Graduate School's International Students web page and calendar; they are also sent to international graduate students via e-mail.

 
Orientation  

Orientation
The purpose of the orientation program is to welcome new graduate students to the Virginia Tech community, introduce the Graduate School and its staff as an important resource for graduate students, and make students aware of university services and resources. The orientation also aims to provide an opportunity for students to meet other new and returning students and learn about graduate student life at Virginia Tech. The orientation usually takes place on Friday before classes begin each semester.
