Photography Contest and Display
Photographs submitted by graduate students will be on display all week in the Graduate Life Center. Be sure to check out this amazing display and vote for your favorite! Voting ballots can be picked up at the GLC Information Desk.

International Education Week Displays
Please take some time to view displays in the Newman Library, VT Bookstore, and Volume II Bookstore. The displays are based on The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba.

Sidewalk Chalk Showdown
Showoff your artistic talent by drawing your country’s flag at the main entrance of the Graduate Life Center. You can pick-up the provided sidewalk chalk between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday (Nov. 13. & 16-20) from GLC Room 110 (Graduate School Student Services area). Individuals, families and student organizations are encouraged to participate!


Friday, November 13

GSA International Wine Social
5:30-9:00pm, University Club
The Graduate Student Assembly is hosting this annual fall Wine Social! This time GSA is kicking off International Education Week with an international flair. Tickets are just $10 for regular admission (pay online or at the door) and $5.00 at the door for GSA delegates and cabinet members. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, contact Lindsay Moss, VP of Programs.

Dance of Nations
6:30pm, Commonwealth Ballroom, Squires Student Center
Council of International Student Organization's (CISO) annual Dance of Nations is a night of international dance performances, music and food. A showcase of international student organizations will take place directly following the performance, which will include the sale of traditional foods and merchandise including international cuisine by India Garden and Hunan King.

Monday, November 16

Rice Around the World
5-7pm, GLC Multipurpose Room
The GLC Fellows are hosting a showcase of international student organizations! Each organization will prepare a rice dish based on their own culinary heritage as well as have information on their organization available. Interested organizations should email Lauren Keister or call 231-9561 to discuss details.

Individual students are also welcome to sign up to bring a rice dish that represents their country. If you want to bring a dish as an individual please complete this survey. Drinks, plates, napkins, etc will all be provided so all we need from you is the rice!

Come by to sample the cornucopia of rice from around the world!


Tuesday, November 17

Groove to Bollywood Moves
12-1pm, GLC Multipurpose Room
Spice up your day by burning a few calories in grace, style, and rhythm. Join a FREE dance session to spice up your personal dancing style by learning some classic Bollywood dance moves. Bring water and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Add your personal twist: Dance barefoot and for the girls:
style up by wearing a flowy skirt. For questions, contact Sruthi Atmakur or Ranjana Mehta.

Hungry Hokies Fast-a-thon and Dinner
Doors open at 5pm, Dinner at 5:30pm, Commonwealth Ballroom, Squires Student Center
The goal of this campus wide fast is to bring awareness of those that go hungry in Blacksburg, VA. For each student, faculty, and staff member that fasts, donations to the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry are requested. The fast will last for twelve hours and then participants are invited to a dinner at 5:30pm. The dinner will be followed by a series of speakers including Nikki Giovanni and Fredda Cromer, from the Interfaith Food Pantry. Register every Thursday until Nov. 17 in front of McBryde and on the Drillfield. Together we can go hungry so someone else doesn't have to. Sponsored by the Muslim Students Association.

The Cultural Implications of Working Abroad: A focus on student projects
7:00-8:00pm, McBryde 113
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will present their international projects in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, and Uganda and explain how cultural differences can make an impact on these kinds of aid projects. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

EWB is a student run chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA whose mission is to: partner with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally, equitable, and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineers and engineering students through education, encouragement, and experience.

Wednesday, November 18

Iranian Cultural Showcase
5:00-7:00pm, GLC Multipurpose Room
Enjoy Persian tea and pastries and browse Iranian art, handcrafts and Persian rugs sponsored by the Iranian Society at VT! Short talks and presentations as well as violin, guitar and daf performances will also be a part of this exciting event!

Global Career Skills: Secrets for Success from North America's Global Career Expert
7:00pm, GLC Auditorium
Learn about international careers from best-selling author Jean-Marc Hachey and his book The BIG Guide to Living and Working Overseas. Discover what skills are required to be successful overseas, long-term career strategies, how to gain international experience and build an “International I.Q.” Uncover step-by-step tactics for finding international work. Discover how to target your job search and sell your international skills. Review the elements of the international resume and how to locate international employers. Hachey’s seminars are brimming with practical tips, expert advice and humorous stories to help you go abroad and prepare for work in the new global economy.

This event is free and open to the public. No advance registration or tickets required. Sponsored by the Council of International Student Organizations (CISO).

The BIG Guide will be available for purchase after the talk for $30.

International Tea Afternoon
1:30-3:30pm, GLC Student Lounge
Celebrate, learn about, and drink different teas from around the world. Open to anyone in or around the university community. Sponsored by the GLC Fellows. Conact Jeanne Mouton if you have questions.

International Experiences Speech Contest
7:00pm, Fralin Auditorium
The Phi Beta Delta international honor society is sponsoring this speech contest for VT faculty, staff, and students. Participants must prepare a five-minute speech based on one facet of your international experience, describing how it has changed your life. $50 cash prizes will be awarded to winners in the following categories: (1) international, (1) US undergraduate student, (1) international and (1) US graduate student, and faculty/staff. Kevin McDonald, VP for Equity and Inclusion, will serve as master of ceremonies.
