Recruiting Programs and Workshops
Open House
The Graduate School Open House program welcomes prospective graduate students to our beautiful campus. Departments are encouraged to invite candidates to attend the programs that are offered on several dates throughout the summer and the academic year. Each Open House will begin at 1 pm. The topics covered will include an overview of graduate education at Virginia Tech, funding graduate education, on and off-campus housing options and meal plans. We also advise prospective students on how to contact their prospective departments in order to schedule a meeting with a faculty or staff member. Prospective students are also given a walking or driving tour of campus. Please direct students to the registration form to select a date to attend our Open House. Please note that due to time restraints, we require that individuals sign up at least one week prior to the date they'd like to attend. They will be sent a confirmation e-mail once we have received their registrations. For more information on our Open House programs, please call Jane Rorrer at 540/231-2494.
Campus Tours
The Graduate School invites prospective graduate students to tour our campus. We are happy to give a walking or driving tour to individuals and groups. Tours are offered during regular business hours, 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Special arrangements can be made for tours after 5 pm and weekends. To schedule a campus tour, please call 540/231-2494 or e-mail us at

Graduate Preview Weekend
The Graduate School hosts a Graduate Preview Weekend each year around the third weekend in February. This recruitment event is aimed at increasing the number of talented and diverse domestic students in graduate education at Tech.
The primary objectives of Preview Weekend are to:
- Familiarize prospective graduate students with Virginia Tech graduate programs, the campus, the Blacksburg community, and resources for student support and financial support.
- Provide prospective students the opportunity to interact with Virginia Tech faculty, administrators, and graduate students.
- Provide information to help prospective students make an informed decision about graduate education at Virginia Tech.
Eligible participants are individuals residing in the U.S. who have applied for admission and have been accepted to Virginia Tech or students who have applied and are awaiting final decision. The Graduate School will provide housing, food, and funds to support students' travel. Nomination forms are e-mailed to departments in December.
Undergraduate Research and Potential Graduate Student Conference
This professional development opportunity, sponsored by the Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence and the Provost's Office, is intended to support the research mission of the university, enrich the educational experience for undergraduates at Virginia Tech, enable students to enhance their oral communication skills through a scholarly exchange of information and ideas, and assist undergraduates in exploring graduate education as a post baccalaureate option. This program is usually held in April and is open to undergraduates at Tech and throughout the Commonwealth. For additional information, conference registration, agenda, and proposal submission guidelines visit www.caee.vt.edu.
