Fellowships, Scholarships and Grants
The various funding awards described here come from many different sources both internal and external to the university. Awards are typically given on a competitive basis. Internal scholarships are often named for distinguished faculty and former alumni who maintained close ties with Virginia Tech.
The A. B. Massey Honorarium
This award was established in 1965 by alumni and friends to honor Professor A.B. Massey. It is presented by the College of Natural Resources to graduate students who have displayed outstanding academic and professional leadership.

Alfred E. Knobler graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in ceramic engineering in 1934. Describing his experience he wrote, “When I came to Tech, it was mostly poor kids trying to make it, bright kids who were first-generation college.” His endowed scholarship funds deserving students in both the English and the Materials Science departments. He is the founder of Pilgrim Glass Corporation.

Aubrey E. Orange Endowed Award in GeoPhysics
In 1985, an anonymous donor established the “Aubrey E. Orange Endowed Award” for graduate students in Geophysics. It was later revealed that the donor was Steve Scott (B.S., 1979; M.S. 1987). Steve established the endowment “in recognition of a dearly loved uncle,” Aubrey Orange, who had willed him $2000 back in 1968 to help with college.

Bradley Fellowships
This award was established in 1987 by Mrs. Marion Bradley Via in honor of her father, Harry Lynde Bradley, who was a Virginia Tech alumnus (circa 1912) and the namesake of the Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering. Mr. Bradley was a pioneer in the electric motor control industry. Mr. Edward Via and the Via family have continued their interest and support of the department. The income from the endowment now exceeds $13 million.

Charles Via, Jr. was an active civil engineering student at Virginia Tech and because of his wife’s generosity in donating $5 million to the department, it chose to carry his name, becoming in 1987 the Charles E. Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Department oversees the Via Scholars Program that awards M.S. and Ph.D. fellowships to outstanding students for graduate study in all areas of civil and environmental engineering.

John Grado Fellowship
John Grado graduated from Tech in 1951. He founded Technographics, an international paper-and-printing company located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and was chairman of the company’s board until his retirement. He has been a significant contributor to engineering education at the university and has endowed a professorship and several student scholarships. He received the department’s Agee Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Board of Visitors approved the naming of the John Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in his honor in 2000.

John Lee Pratt Research Fellowships
John Lee Pratt, who died in 1975 at the age of 96, was a Virginia native and farmer who was also a General Motors executive. He left $12 million to Virginia Tech, for the study of animal nutrition and engineering. This endowment has grown to $38 million over the years and is used to provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students, to support faculty salaries., and to underwrite research in animal nutrition and engineering.
